A potentially disastrous situation was averted today after a truck carrying highly explosive oxygen tanks struck a light pole at an intersection.

The truck driver told emergency workers he was headed west when his brakes gave out. He said he swerved off the road to avoid hitting another car, and that’s when the truck rolled over a curb and into the light pole.
