How Safe Are Filipino Roads? 3 Dead, 25 Injured in Brake Failure Crash

Three people were mercilessly killed last week in the Philippines after a civilian convoy experienced brake failure, lost control and plunged into a ravine. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first brake failure related crash to claim multiple lives in the Philippines.

According to Safetymatters.com, the vehicular mortality rate in the Philippines has skyrocketed the current death toll is well over 1,500 people, and the year isn’t even half over.

Here is a quick recap of all the major crashes that took place this past 6 months:

On May 14, 11 people were killed when a bus plummeted down a 150-meter deep ravine in Bontoc, Mountain Province.

On April 10, a Singapore-based Filipina nurse was killed when the ambulance she was riding was hit by a speeding pickup in Cebu City.

On March 26, a 51-year-old school director and her daughter were killed after their car was rammed by a Philippine National Railways train at a poorly lit crossing.

On February 24, three people were killed when the driver of an Isuzu Forward truck lost control of the brake, hitting three tricycles, two motorcycles and a dump truck in Rosales, Pangasinan.

On January 12, a wayward dump truck killed 5 people, including an 11-year-old boy, and injured 13 others in a freak accident in Taytay, Rizal.

The Philippines ranks 70th in the world for road safety, and I’m surprised it’s not lower. With a rate of 20 people per 100,000, I think I still won’t take my chances.
