A 71-year-old woman was crossing a local street in Port Moody, BC, Canada at around 3:20 p.m. when a southbound flatbed truck struck a car and an SUV that were waiting at the intersection. The large commercial vehicle then overturned and slid forward, ultimately hitting the senior citizen.
Port Moody Police Department Insp. Ken MacDonald said it was too early to determine exactly what caused the crash, but they are strongly considering the possibility of brake failure.
The elderly woman was said to be shopping with her daughter before the crash, and coincidentally that same daughter was about 300 feet behind the woman when it occurred, ultimately sparing her from a metal tomb.
As for the driver, he was taken to a local hospital with a leg injury and a concussion. The driver of the SUV was taken to hospital with neck and back pain. Another victim who was driving a Toyota Celica suffered from a concussion and a broken ankle.
