Eight school children escaped unscathed after their school bus went out of control and hurtled down an extremely steep hill in Mumbai. The bus driver, K Nallya Raj, was regarded as a town hero for intentionally steering the bus into the wall to bring it to a stop, therefore preventing it from crashing into another vehicle or pedestrians.
“I was driving up the hill when the brakes failed and I lost control of the bus. I immediately thought of reversing the bus into the wall of a housing society to make it stop,” said 50-yearold Raj, who has been driving school buses for 24 years.
The bus scraped a lamppost before completely slamming into the boundary wall of of a local Housing Society. The incident took place around 2.30 pm.
Local residents and employees of nearby shops rushed to the aid of the children, who were safely brought down. All staff members and children on board had zero serious injuries.
According to spectator Jai Pal, shortly after the incident a second bus arrived to take the children to their homes.
However, the bus operator, ArunTravels, could land in legal trouble as the bus in question did not have the name of the school on the side, didn’t have an emergency exit or reportedly even a handbrake.
