WHY I AM IN THE GBSC?

I have been an advocate of safety and the environment while working on zero copper brakes as past Chairman of the BMC (including a White house visit on fighting counterfeit auto parts). OE auto makers are developing new brake systems focusing on safer and improved brake performance. These standards include brake pad corrosion. The North American aftermarket has become the wild west with no published standards reflecting the OE brake pad it is replacing other than the FMSI number indicating application. My concerns in the aftermarket brake environment include the lack of simple regulations in regard to stopping distance, banning the use of hazardous materials such as lead and asbestos, and inferior steel used to produce backing plates and hardware which may effect corrosion. Without regulation, we will continue to see the safety gap and brake performance widen as the soccer Mom/Dad unknowingly replace a well performing original equipment brake pad on the family SUV with an inferior aftermarket brake pad. It is important to educate and promote safety on replacement brake pads as we need to know what is in that box the soccer Mom /Dad is buying.
