Dump Truck’s Brakes Fail in Tampa Crash

According to sources, a dump truck fully loaded with dirt crashed in Water Works Park Monday morning, closing a portion of Highland Avenue in Tampa. No injuries were reported.

The single-vehicle accident happened about 8:40 a.m. when the truck’s driver was leaving an interstate but failed to negotiate a left turn, Tampa police said. The driver told police his brakes failed.

The truck went through the front gate of the Water Works Park but stopped short of the Hillsborough River, police said.

The Department of Environmental Protection and Tampa Fire Rescue also responded to handle an oil spill.

The driver of the truck, Ariel Perez Alvarez, 43, of Halifax Drive, Tampa, was issued a traffic ticket for defective brakes and tires.

The truck was towed and Highland Avenue was reopened for traffic.
