Brakes Fail As SUV Crashes Into Akron Home

An Akron woman reportedly lost her brakes on her GMC Jimmy last week when driving to the grocery store. Police said the brakes failed at the summit of a very steep hill and the shear momentum from the hill was deadly by itself.

The woman claims to have attempted to stop by slamming on her brakes and pulling the emergency brake, but both had no effect to slow her speed.

Out of options, she crossed one final street, just barely missing a guardrail at the bottom of the hill, and crashed through the front windows of a house.

The owner of the home, Renatta Griffith, commented on the incident: “I’m just glad they weren’t home, just glad we weren’t home at the time because it would have been a different turnout”.

The SUV went straight through their the living room, through an interior wall and into an office before poking out the side and rear exterior walls of the suburban home.

Police said they believe the driver’s story. She has a valid license and was not intoxicated. She has not been charged with any crime whatsoever.

The driver was listed as serious, but in stable condition at Akron General Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon.

Griffith is currently working with her insurance company to see if her home can be salvaged.

“Right now, I’m staying with relatives, and then again, we’re just taking it one day at a time.”
