Brake Failure In India: A Not-So-Happy Ending

NEW DELHI- Seventeen people returning from a wedding were brutally killed this morning after the truck they were riding in experienced brake failure and plummeted into a nearby gorge. According to Indian Officer Dinesh Pant, a total of 47 people were on the bus when it crashed and 28 people survived, including the bride and groom who were on a different bus at the time.

The driver lost control of the vehicle after the brakes failed on a steep road in Uttarakhand state, Pant said. The driver was also killed in the crash.

India has the world’s deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and older vehicles.
