A church bus filled with children was involved in a fatal wreck last night in Indiana after the bus lost it’s brakes and careened through an intersection.
The bus then struck two separate vehicles, killing one almost instantaneously.
The bus was driven by the church’s associative minister, who told police brake failure had caused the accident.
Unlike regular school buses in Indiana, church buses aren’t state regulated, therefore are not required by law to submit to annual inspection by State Police. They are only allowed access to a church bus’s service records if they were involved in an accident.
“They are required by the federal regulations to do certain things,” Sgt. Chuck Tharp of the Indiana State Police explained. “And many of the buses, whether it’s for hire or church bus, are required to do that. And they have less record keeping requirements for the most part.”
Eighteen people were on the bus at the time of the crash. Although none of the kids died, many were sent to the hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
