Kolkata,India- A two-month-old baby girl was ejected from her uncle’s hands and killed while 16 passengers other passengers were injured in a bus crash that police are blaming on brake failure and the awful condition of the vehicle – an apparently common sight in Kolkata.
The accident occurred on one of the busiest stretches of Kolkata around 8.20 AM on Monday. The Whiteliner bus of West Bengal Surface Transport, was said to have abruptly swerved right and slammed into the concrete railing of a bridge. The impact resulted in the bus flipping over, as hundreds of motorists watched in shock.
Sheikh Salauddin, an auto driver who witnessed the accident, is still at a loss of words to explain how the bus crashed, but is thankful that it did not topple on the opposite side of the freeway. “It would have been a disaster,” he said.

Passersby jumped into the rescue and were soon aided by police. They pulled out the shocked and injured victims through the windows and stopped passing vehicles to take them to hospital. Although the others were treated and discharged, Draupadi Devi, 45, is under observation. Three of the injured are women.
Investigators from local Kolkata police stations are investigating the accident. “Either the brakes failed or the steering wheel jammed. We are going for a mechanical check of the bus and will also study CCTV footage. From what we have seen of the footage, the bus was not racing. We now need to ensure that buses have proper fitness certificates,” said an investigator. The driver, who fractured his leg, will be eventually arrested, said an officer.
