A Christian Church bus was involved in a fatal crash Thursday night in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The Knoxville News Setinel reports that one person was killed and many others were injured when the bus suffered an alleged brake failure, careened through a red light and ultimately struck a Kia sedan, killing the driver of the compact car. The bus then collided with a northbound Chevrolet S-10 pickup just before it jumped the curb, skimmed the CVS sign and, came to a stop in front of the pharmacy.
The bus, which was carrying more than a dozen youths with Berea Christian Church of Brazil, failed to come to a stop as it came down a steep hill on Oglewood Avenue and into a busy intersection at Broadway, Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk said.
Among the 18 people on the bus were two children who were later transported to a local Tennessee Children’s Hospital with what seemed to be nonfatal injuries. Three adults on board were taken to a Regional Medical Center.
The Kia’s female driver, whose name has not been released, had latched the seat belt but didn’t actually wear it to keep the automated reminder from beeping, DeBusk said.
The driver was sitting on top of the belt and was not restrained at all,” according to DeBusk. “The proper use of the seat belt would have made a significant difference in the crash as the damage to the vehicle was mainly contained on the passenger side.”
The bus driver, who was not injured in the crash, was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center to provide a blood sample, as required per state law in fatal crashes, DeBusk said.
He added that it could be several days before KPD crash investigators can even confirm whether the bus suffered brake failure or not.
If anything is learned from this crash, it is to ALWAYS wear your seat belt! It could be a difference of life and death.
