Braking Bad: RV’s Brakes Fail In Fatal Washington Crash

An RV reportedly smashed through several barricades and plummeted down 150 feet of stairs at the University of Washington-Tacoma campus Monday afternoon, ultimately killing the driver.

The incident happened just after 1 p.m. when the RV brakes went out, causing the vehicular behemoth to jump over the sidewalk, hit the concrete barriers and careen down the stairwell at the center of the campus.

The 65-year-old woman driving the 18-foot RV was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said preliminary investigation shows the woman was ejected from the RV and then was crushed as it continued rolling down the hill.

Fortunately, no pedestrians were struck and there were no other injuries, fire officials said.

Reports say investigators are blaming brake failure as the sole cause of the crash.

The victim’s name has not been released pending notification of family members.

Police say the university is offering counseling services to anyone who witnessed the accident.
