MEMPHIS,TN- A fire truck was the victim of a catastrophic brake failure last Friday when en route to an apartment fire. A few firefighters were already on the scene before the second engine arrived and were stunned to see their comrades hopelessly crash into a cement barrier just outside the building.
Fire Director Alvin Benson told news outlets that the fire truck was a 20 year-old backup truck that had been recently checked for mechanical problems but passed with no problems. Mr.Benson was also quoted stating that some of their own equipment could be considered “old” and that the city of Memphis is only able to purchase a few items a year for the force resulting in the presence of some outdated items.
The department did have another backup truck to use, but it was being serviced at the time of the fire.
