A 60-foot flatbed tractor trailer crashed into the Boston Common after its brakes failed yesterday afternoon, fire officials said.
The driver had mistakenly turned down the wrong road and a Boston police officer offered to guide the truck in the direction it needed to go.
But suddenly, the driver’s brakes completely gave out, sending him down careening down the street and into the Commons, where the cab barreled down a set of stairs and into a walkway. The driver was shaken but fortunately uninjured, and despite the copious amounts of tourists and others having lunch in the popular downtown park, not a single person was injured.
Already having an officer clear the area “probably saved some people,” Fire Chief Kevin Brooks said. “It was a prefect situation for not hurting anybody.”
“He wasn’t on the gas,” Brooks added in the defense of the driver. “His brakes were gone and shot straight down.”
Brooks said the driver was from Georgia, in town to either pick up or drop off cars from the flatbed truck. So far no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.
