Brake Failure: Driver Takes “Leap” Of Faith But Falls Short

A truck driver was crushed to death Tuesday night after he jumped from his out-of-control truck in a panic when his brakes failed in Harlem, cops reported.

Albert Cortez, 45, was driving west along the Third Ave. Bridge near East 129th St. when the box truck’s brakes failed at 5:14 p.m., officials said.

He immediately jumped out of the truck in an attempt to save his own life but failed when he was crushed by his right rear tire.

Emergency responders rushed Cortez to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time after.
