Jeepney Crash Kills 5 in Philippines

Five people people died while more than thirty others were injured when an overloaded jeepney crashed alongside the road before it fell on a shallow canal in the Philippines on Saturday night.

Davy Vicente Limmong, spokesman of the Cordillera Administrative Region police, said all the victims were on their way home after attending a meeting for the Conditional Cash Transfer program of the government in the Philippines.

“The driver of the jeepney was negotiating a sharp downward curve when the brakes malfunctioned,” said Limmong.

“As a result, the vehicle fell on the shallow canal and was nearly overturned,” he said.

Limmong identifies the fatalities as Melba Millare, Slomen Colangan, Veronica Tucio, Noreen Tugadi and Dimple Tugadi. They all died in the hospital where they were taken following the crash.

The driver of the vehicle, Victor Gallotan Pacio, was taken to the hospital along and is currently in critical condition.

As of yesterday afternoon, nine victims are still at the Abra Christian Hospital while eight others are in Seares Memorial Hospital.
