For most people, going to the mechanic or car shop isn’t always a walk in the park. There is always a wait, hidden fees and don’t forget the fancy automotive jargon used every waking moment to confuse the heck out of you.
So in order to clear up some of that pointless confusion, I’ve put together a few tips and tricks (courtesy of Scott Meyer) to use next time your car requires some automotive expertise.
1. While it is rewarding to make repairs yourself, occasionally you will find yourself in a situation you can’t fix. Don’t be ashamed to take your car to the mechanic.
2. When talking to a mechanic, try to explain the problem as thoroughly as you can. This will ensure the mechanic is well versed with issue, easily allowing him to asses the root of your problem and solve the issue in less time.
3. Patience is a virtue, more-so when it comes to cars, so don’t be disappointed when your issue can’t be fixed with the snap of the finger. Most mechanics are veterans of the trade and take pride in what they do, so it is typical for a seasoned professional to go the ‘extra mile’ or take his time to ensure your car is in tip-top shape.
4. Mechanics are people too. Granted there are crooks out there, but don’t be so quick to judge your mechanic before he even does the job. Always do your research before choosing a shop, and be sure to always read more than a few reviews.
Keeps these tips and tricks in mind every time you go to the mechanic and you’ll have smooth sailing!
