A section of Interstate 70 West in Rostraver Township was closed off for more than 12 hours Tuesday after a midnight brake failure-related accident involving two trucks nearly barricaded the entire freeway.
According to reports by Trib Total Media, a tanker descending down an entrance ramp experienced total brake failure and immediately lost control of his vehicle seconds after merging on to the highway. In an attempt to stop, the tanker lost it’s traction and flipped into the nearby cement barrier. Ultimately causing a oncoming tractor-trailer to to crash in to the very same barrier.
The unnamed driver transporting sand told reporters that he was only going a measly 35 MPH when descending on the highway when his brakes failed. “The engine brake stopped and I started picking up speed and I couldn’t stop,” said the driver, who refused to give his name after the incident.
According to state police Trooper Andre Stenson, that driver was climbing out of his toppled truck when a tractor-trailer carrying milk along I-70 West swerved to avoid him and smashed into the barrier about 50 yards away. Currently, an investigation of the tankers brakes in underway.
The aftermath of the accident was not a pretty sight. For those caught in the traffic, they were subjected to hours and hours of bumper to bumper traffic, which resulted in an additional two separate accidents not far from the original one that caused all the ruckus in the first place.
Fallowfield fire chief Anthony Fleming was unavailable for comment. A state police spokesman at the Belle Vernon barracks said there was no additional information on the accident as of last night.
