Seven people died and 14 others were seriously injured in a vehicular accident along a provincial road in the Philippines last night.
Police Senior Inspector Domingo Murillo II of the local police said “the assembled vehicle was loaded with 30 passengers; some of them occupied the rooftop of the vehicle.”
To an unfortunate degree of irony, the victims were said to be on their way home after attending a wake in a nearby town when the accident happened.
Police investigation revealed that the brakes on the truck malfunctioned while descending down a hill, causing the driver to lose control and ultimately crash the vehicle.
According to witnesses, those who occupied the rooftop were immediately tossed upon impact, while four died on the spot and three seriously wounded passengers died in a local hospital.
Vehicular accidents killed over 18,000 people last year in the Philippines.
