When I started working on cars, my measuring calipers were the barrel-style calipers where I had to add up pennies, nickels and dimes to come up with the thickness of a rotor. Unfortunately, I was working on import cars and most of the stamped rotor dimensions were metric and my caliper was standard. I remember having to do the math to see if the rotor was below specifications. The back of the repair order was covered sometimes in scribbles.
Recently, I had a chance to try out a digital micrometers on a brake job. I have to say it is definitely easier and faster to use a digital micrometer caliper. Here are some models that are on the market:
